Day 63 – Rio Gallegos

The rusty boat.

The day we had hoped would not happen lay before us. We had to try and find something interesting to do in Rio Gallegos until 7.00pm. We started with a stroll along the estuary to the port and spent a couple of minutes admiring a rusty boat and some empty warehouses whilst being barked at by a stray dog. There were a lot of play areas on our return stroll so we took a few ‘busman’s holiday’ photos and noted the complete absence of children…in fact we hadn’t recalled seeing any since the small girl that got blown down the street on our last visit. Just as we pondered this fact there was a sound like 2 gunshots and we ducked and turned to see an overhead street banner being whipped by the wind! We needed to find a coffee and escape the torment. We warmed up with coffee and medialunas and inspected the town map for inspiration. An hour later we were window shopping and wondering why, in such a cold and windy place, everything still shuts down between 1.00 and 4.00pm.  After eating a huge carboard tray of facturas to cheer ourselves up we cycled out past the ‘Eva Peron waving to the crowds statue’ (wrong place love) and waiting eagerly for the bus next to two dogs who were otherwise constantly engaged in other activities. Thankfully the bus arrived like a knight in shining armour ready to whisk us away to a land of anything else. The bikes cost $172.00 this time. Apparently on this bus the cost is directly proportional to distance....which is interesting. There must have been some mistake with the seat allocation as the toilets were not located next to our seat. We missed the opportunity to meet and greet everyone on the bus and advise them of toilets various quirks and foibles.
