Day 20 - Pucon 0km - 1st Jan 2010!

Villarrica volcano

Had another fantastic breakfast. As this is a German owned hostel there was a European flavour:  tort, fruit, cereals, toast, yoghurt, homemade jams. I think we've become obsessed with our breakfasts. They set us up for the day and would often determine our general mood. So we set off very happy (even though we were having a bike free day) to explore Pucon. This is where the wealthy seem to come on holiday with lots of big modern cars, designer clothes and watches on display. There were more big 'Boots style' chemists than usual, almost one every block. The Chileans are incredibly clean smelling people and we have started to feel a little self conscious if we haven't showered and cleaned our teeth within the last hour! There was still a lot of cloud  and no sign of the elusive volcano. However, our wait was rewarded after dinner, when we spotted it emerging between the clouds and dashed out with the camera to get some very low light shots just before the sun disappeared. We might not see one again! Apparently,  it's the first time it has been out in 5 days so we were lucky. It was a  most beautiful and mesmerising sight...we could hardly take our eyes off it. It's Friday night tonight and the start of the summer holidays proper for the locals...so it will be a lot busier everywhere from now on.
