Day 72 – Lago Mascardi to Bariloche – 38km
The hill climbs were now behind us and we almost freewheeled along gently undulating roads along the side of Lago Gutierrez slowly approaching the location of John’s accident, when we battled against the wind in the opposite direction. We stopped on a rock to appreciate the views before the final turn into Bariloche and the realization that this section of road seems vulnerable to strong gusty winds! Despite a fairly windless ride, when we turned the corner (the one we hoped to reach just before the fateful gust 5 weeks previously) the wind increased, picking up dust and buffeting the bikes. After just a few hours riding we were in Bariloche and booking into the B&B which was full on our last visit. Guemes Hosteria is run by a lovely old couple who could not have been more kind and helpful. Mr. Guemes used to be a tour guide and his enthusiasm and local knowledge was boundless. Mrs. Guemes constantly smiled and looked jolly despite being up early every day and always being available to able to chat to guests in the lounge when we were dragging ourselves up the stairs to bed!
